Pros:
Pros? If anyone can find any, let me know!
Crons:
These crooks are going to get you with their fine prints, even if it says one thing, they have an addendum that says otherwise!
The trick is to get you to sign up for a long term contract, then they get you with the "value-added" BS.
Additional Comments:
A friend of mine also said to post this.
He called BellSouth for information regarding FastAccess. The Sales rep rattled off prices. $150 for the external modem and network card. The $150.00 installation fee would be waived if I installed it myself. No problem. I decided to sign up for FastAccess. It was $10.00 less per month than others I had looked at and even though I would have to pay for the modem, I would own it (incase I ever decided to switch.)
A week later, I ordered the service. They told me that the modem would arrive in 7 to 10 working days and in the meantime, someone would be out to check the line.
The BellSouth rep came and checked the line. I waited patiently for the modem. No modem ever came. On day 12, I called to inquire about the modem. The line had not been "released" and therefore the modem had not been sent. BellSouth had ordered me a USB modem. I did not want a USB modem, primarily because I can't use a hardware firewall with USB. I informed the BellSouth Rep that I wanted the modem with the nic card that I was told would be purchasing when I spoke to the first rep (model: Alcatel 1000). The BellSouth Rep told me that these modems were no longer available (unless I wanted to pay a $150.00 installation fee) and I would have to choose between a USB modem or an internal modem.....
I most certainly have no intention of paying $150.00 for a modem that I DON'T want! Nor am I going to pay $300.00 for one I want when I can get it for free!
On second thought, If I don't own the modem, and anything goes wrong with it, the service provider would have to repair/replace the modem if they want me to continue buying their service. So, I canceled the order with BellSouth and signed up with Earthlink/Mindspring. The E/M service is $10.00 more a month, but I don't have to buy the modem or pay for installation.
Well, A week after I canceled the order, I received a package from FastAccess (Shipped next day UPS). You guessed it, the modem. I didn't even open the box. I called BellSouth and informed them I had the modem. They apologized and told me that they would send out RMA return shipping labels and I would have them within 2 to 3 business days.
6 days later, I still had no shipping labels. I called back again. This time I was told that the account is still active. ACTIVE? This order was cancelled BEFORE it was ever activated. I was transferred a couple of times before I finally ended up in billing. The Rep put me on hold while she checked to see why I hadn't gotten the labels. When she returned, she informed me that the problem was because there were two addresses (one for billing and one for shipping). Funny, they had no problem getting the modem to me even though the shipping address is different than the billing. She has promised me that I will not be billed for DSL and if I get charged for equipment, call back and they will credit my account.
In the meantime, I have been trying to get DSL thru Earthlink/Mindspring ....however, that has been held up because BellSouth has dragged its feet about releasing the line.
It has been 6 weeks since I ordered the service and 4 since I cancelled. I still have a modem and no DSL. All because of BellSouth's....Incompetence?
I can only imagine what is going to happen with billing
